Another Tiring Night at Conquest!

On November 17th, we had one of our most heavily-attended meetings in a long while! It was great to see 20 boys and 10 dads present for a fun, educational, evening. We welcomed Joshua and Jonathan to Conquest for the first time. After a brutal series of tug-o-war contests among the boys, Mr. Borek and Mr. Frederick taught them how to change a car tire.

Later, the Junior and Father-and-Son groups prepared posters that demonstrated what they have learned about SELF-DISCIPLINE over the last few meetings. The young guys presented their ideas with courage and enthusiasm to a panel of "celebrity" peer judges, who were selected from among the older Club group. The judges (who themselves were once in the youngsters' shoes) scored the contest with fairness and flair! The creativity of these guys really shined through that night!

Go Support Father Gabriel Richard Football This Saturday!

From one of our Conquest parents:

Just wanted to invite anyone who may be interested to come to Howell High School at 1:00 Saturday to watch our son and the Father Gabriel Richard's football team as they play in the Division 5 Semi-finals against Portland.

This is the farthest Gabriel Richard has ever gone in the playoffs, and we are hoping for a lot of support and noise from fans on Saturday. From what we hear, the whole town of Portland is behind their team, so we want to invite as many FGR supporters as possible!

If you can't make it to the game, it will be streamed live on foxsportsdetroit.com (click on the Prep zone).

This sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Of course, coming directly to Conquest afterward can only make it better!

Please pray for the success and safety of all the players!

Never a Dull Moment at Conquest!

Mr. Burke demonstrated proper knife safety in our most recent meeting. I think we all learned something of great value that night. In hindsight, this activity fit perfectly with our virtue theme of this campaign: Self-Discipline.

We were joined for the first time by Anthony and Dylan. Welcome to Conquest, boys!

The Juniors group continued with their studies about St. Therese of Lisieux and the Club boys started planning a project that they thought up all on their own. They want to organize and host a Catholic mini-conference for the Livingston County area. It would be for boys and their dads and might include several speakers, breakfast, and of course Holy Mass. They hope to bring their positive experiences at Conquest to as many people as possible.

Please support the boys with your prayers and advice as they undertake this very ambitious and holy project!

Recap of Our First-Ever Morning Meeting

Thanks to all of you who were able to rearrange your schedules last Saturday. Our apologies to those of you who were unable to make the change. It was a rare occurrence that allowed us to participate in the Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally in Howell. There was a small turnout this time so our presence was very well-received. God willing, our federal government will soon cease with its unconstitutional attacks and these rallies will become unnecessary.

Even though the meeting was shorter than usual, the boys had a great time with formation. Plus, we had time for a whiffleball home run derby and fathers vs. sons dodge ball. Nicely played, boys; we'll get you next time!

We now return to a regular meeting schedule of every other Saturday. We'll see you on the evening of Saturday November 3rd!

Update: A ConQuest Poll!

The results of the survey favor having the meeting early at 10:00 AM at the Barn with some time for formation and possibly a brief activity. We will plan to have some pizza delivered for lunch and then head over to Howell for the rally. If you and your son(s) cannot join us at the rally, then please note that the regular portion of our meeting will end at 11:30 AM.

In a recent post I mentioned the Stand Up Rally for Religious Freedom that will take place in downtown Howell at the historic courthouse this Saturday at Noon. It has been suggested that we combine this event with the meeting that we have already planned later this same day. This would require us pulling our meeting ahead several hours.

While the rallies are nationwide and have been planned for some time, the Howell location was added only within the last couple days. We realize that many of you may have already have made other plans. Therefore, we have created a poll to determine whether or not to pull our meeting forward and combine it with the rally.

What is your preference for the meeting this Saturday?

This could be a marvelous opportunity to demonstrate Catholic leadership-in-action to the boys . We as individuals and as a Church are under attack by our own federal government. Our basic freedoms are being trampled upon and our bishops have made it clear that we cannot comply with the government's demands.

From Fiendish Elephants to Hammered Dulcimers...ConQuest's Got It Covered!

We had an excellent meeting to kick-off the new season! Despite the cold, rainy weather, we had a lot of fun inside the warm barn. In fact, we had such a blast that we ran out of time for our scheduled formation! Fortunately, Br. Joshua Thompson was on-hand to provide us with a great spiritual talk about one of St. John Bosco's famous dreams, "The Fiendish Elephant".

As a bonus, we met Br. Adam Zettel who brought his hammered dulcimer along and demonstrated his skill in playing it. I think I speak for everybody when I say it was unexpectedly cool!

Thank you, Br. Joshua and Br. Adam, for contributing so much to our meeting!

STAND UP Rally in Howell this Saturday at noon!

Right To Life - Livingston County is holding another Stand Up Rally for Religious Freedom this Saturday from Noon until 1:00 PM at the historic Howell Courthouse. Over 140 rallies such as this will take place nationwide at the same time.

The first two nationwide rallies were held on March 23 and June 8 with a total of over 300 cities and 125,000 participants.

This is a perfect opportunity for our ConQuest families and friends to make a statement to those in government and in our communities who do not value our rights as individuals to live our Catholic Faith freely.

For additional information, please contact RTL Livingston County at 810-227-5788.

The wait is finally over...first meeting this Saturday!

At long last, we WILL have our first regular meeting of the season this Saturday evening from 6:45-8:45 at the Barn. We are excited to welcome several new families to ConQuest! Please try to arrive promptly so that we can explain what ConQuest is all about and discuss some of the minor changes that are new this year. If you need help with directions, please email or call me at 248-563-1671.

In an effort to make our meetings run more smoothly we are asking the dads to volunteer ahead of time for occasional jobs throughout the season. Your contribution can vary from one meeting to the next, and at some meetings you may have no specific job at all. These responsibilities fall under the following main categories:

Check-In / Code Checks: Arrive 10 minutes early to check in the boys, collect dues, award points, then do "code check" talks with boys to discuss commitments and accountability during activity part of the meeting
Prayer and Points: Prepare point belts, set up point tally board, opening prayer, squad points announcement at beginning/middle/end, closing prayer, announce next meeting
Snack: Juice, snack, cups, and plates for 24 people, facilitate serving the boys and clean-up (use other dads and older boys)
Fun Activity - Club (Older Boys): Plan and facilitate games or educational activity that is fun and exciting, and normally involving physical activity (may be combined with younger boys). Examples from previous meetings include kickball, dodgeball, fishing, and sledding. We are looking for some new, creative ideas here.
Fun Activity - Younger Boys: Plan and facilitate games or educational activity that is fun and exciting, and normally involving physical activity (may be combined with older boys). Examples from previous meetings include kickball, dodgeball, fishing, and sledding. We are looking for some new, creative ideas here.
Slice of Spirit: Provide a short reflection (roughly 2-3 minutes) during snack time, leader/man talk, virtue story, interesting facts, fun video, song, etc.

For this first meeting, we already have volunteers for "Prayer and Points" and "Snack", plus we will be joined by Fr. Thomas Flynn, Br. Joshua Thompson, and Br. Adam Zettel from the Legionaries of Christ. You can expect them to provide us with a great talk including some solid catechesis. So we are still looking for somebody to help check everybody in and to select an activity for the boys to do. On the blog, there is a recent post from one of the dads with some idea starters. If you have any interest in helping fill some of these roles for the first meeting, please send us an email. I will be happy to explain some of the terminology for you.

The cost we are requesting to cover the group's educational materials and other supplies is $70 for each boy. We purchase this ready-made package from the national ConQuest organization which maintains it and updates it each year.

Remember it is never too late to spread the word to anybody else you may know with boys between ages 5 and 16 who is seeking a solid, Catholic organization that builds Virtue and reinforces the Faith. There is so much to gain in the small amount of time that we spend together as fathers, sons, and brothers in Christ!

See you Saturday!

UPDATE: ConQuest 2012-2013 Season Is Underway!

Special thanks to the dads and boys who were able to make it last Friday to discuss this upcoming season and also to those who sent their suggestions separately. If you were not able to make it and have something to say, please feel free to email us at any time. We are going to have an amazing group this year!

We plan to hold the meetings every other Saturday beginning at 6:45 PM. The schedule for the first campaign is as follows:

October 13
October 20
November 3
November 17
December 1
December 8 - Awards

Hopefully, this regular meeting cadence will make it easier for you to make plans to be there. You will notice one exception to the "every other week" rule is the final meeting to close out the first campaign and the 2012 calendar year. We thought it was appropriate to wrap up the first campaign by honoring Our Lady's Immaculate Conception!

This year we are asking the dads and even the boys to take on a little more responsibility. We want to utilize your skills and creativity to make our meetings more dynamic and spiritually enriching. This will include everything from the basics like sharing snack duties to the more complicated such as preparing a short spiritual talk and discovering new dynamic activities for the kids to do. Look for more information regarding this in a forthcoming post, but those of you who are ConQuest veterans probably already have some excellent ideas in mind! In fact, you may have noticed that one of our dads already contributed a post that includes some good ideas for activities.

For those of you who are new to ConQuest, I should mention that there is a cost that goes toward the excellent Catholic curriculum materials that are developed by the national organization. Each boy also receives a kit, the contents of which vary from year to year. Typically, there is a t-shirt, water bottle, wall calendar, and other ConQuest-themed items. I do not yet know what this cost will be, but it will largely depend upon the number of kids who are signed up.

Please contact us if you have any questions. Remember to mention ConQuest to families you may know with boys ages 5-16. The entire family will benefit from their sons' experience.

Idea-Starters for Dynamic Activities for Our Meetings

Hello all.  I went to seek out some team-building exercises that we can consider using for future meetings.  Here are a few examples of what I found.  I've done a few of these through various work trainings and they're pretty good for the group to do and won't take too much time.  Likely may need to break down the overall group into more age appropriate groups depending on the activity.

See you all on the 22nd.  Have a blessed week.

Electric Fence
You will need at least two people for this activity. A slightly larger group is better. Tie a rope between two objects at about waist height; two trees will work well. Ask participants to stand on one side of this "fence." Challenge them to get everyone over the fence without touching it. Consider planting something nearby that could be used as a step, but do not make it obvious. This game requires planning and collaboration. Before beginning, check the area for dangerous items such as broken glass or poison ivy. If participants try risky maneuvers, make sure to spot them. This game could also be played in the water.
Antique Can
For this exercise, you will need at least five people. You will also need a large can and a ball, rock or other object to place inside the can. Tell a story about the object inside the can to establish its great importance or value. Assign constraints to each person or on the entire group by placing limitations on hands, arms, legs, sight or speech. Direct the group to stand in a circle and pass the can around clockwise or counterclockwise until it passes completely around the circle. If the can or the item in the can drops to the ground, the group must start over. If the group completes the task quickly, assign greater limitations. Ask participants to discuss how they worked around the constraints imposed on them and how these compare to the obstacles they face in their lives.
Tarp Flip
For this game you will need at least two people and a tarp or blanket. The tarp should be folded such that it provides enough space for everyone to stand on it. The smaller the tarp, the more difficult the activity. Ask participants to stand on the tarp, then challenge them to flip half the tarp over without stepping off it onto the ground. At the end, each participant should be on top of the underside of the tarp, which will be approximately half the size it was at the start. You should use this activity with people who will not be uncomfortable in close proximity to each other in an effort to promote communication and collaboration in problem solving.

Back-to-Back Drawing
You will need at least two people for this activity. Break your group into pairs. Ask each pair to decide who will be the director and who will be the illustrator. Hand a simple drawing to the director. Instruct her to conceal the drawing from her partner. The illustrator gets a blank sheet of paper and a pencil. He, too, must conceal his paper from his partner. Next, directors tell their illustrators how to replicate the drawing, using only verbal instructions. To make this more challenging, do not allow the illustrators to ask questions. Alternatively, you may choose to allow illustrators to ask only questions with yes or no answers. When all pairs are finished, bring the group back together to compare drawings and discuss how they handled the assignment. Invite participants to discuss the process of giving and receiving instructions.

Criss Cross
Perform this game in a medium-size room. Divide the group into four teams of relatively equal size. Send each team into a corner of the room. When you give the command, each team's goal is to get to the opposite side of the room, moving diagonally across the space. Before the game starts, think of several active commands that you can communicate. You could say hop, run, walk backward, barrel roll or any other active movement. When you give the command, all four groups begin performing that command to cross the room. Inevitably, a bottleneck will form at the center of the room as all teams attempt to cross. The first team to cross completely receives a point. The first team to get five points chooses the next game.
Knowledge Ball
Write get-to-know-you questions on pieces of masking tape and affix them to a large, blown-up beach ball. With kids, ask questions such as "What's your favorite breakfast meal?", "If you could be an animal, what animal would you be?" or any other question that could provide an insightful but innocent answer. Sit the players in a circle and toss the ball to any player. When she catches the ball, ask her to answer the question closest to her right thumb. For very young children, have volunteers nearby read the question to the child. When she answers, have her toss the ball to any other player of her choosing, continuing the game.

Tangled Up
Tangled up works best in groups of eight to 15, so if you have a large group, split them up into several smaller groups. Stand each group in a circle and instruct them to reach both hands into the middle of the circle, grabbing the hands of any two players. The result is a mess of tangled hands. Without breaking grips with any other player, instruct the team to now untangle themselves completely. This may require them to twist, turn, and step under or over other teammate's arms. If you have several groups playing at once, see which group can untangle the fastest.

Get the Bag
Using a large empty room or half of a basketball court, split the teams up into equal groups, sitting each group against the wall on opposite sides of the space. Have each group number off, so that each player on a single team has a different number, but they have a number matching one of the players from the opposite team. Place a beanbag in the center of the room. To start the game, call out any number. Both players from opposing teams with that number, jump up and run to the center, trying to capture the bean bag. Whichever player gets the bag must try to return the bag where she was sitting. The other team's player tries to tag the player who has the bag before they can return it. If the player gets tagged, she must drop the bean bag and the tagger can then retrieve it and try to return it to her team. The player who successfully returns it to her spot without getting tagged earns a point for her team.

Lugnuts Game Recap

Ok, so this post is a bit overdue. But it has been a busy off-season so far!

I posted some photos from our trip out to the ballpark for your enjoyment. They are in a slideshow that you will find on the right hand side of the blog. If you happen to have any other photos of your own, please feel free to send them to conquestbrighton@gmail.com and I can add them.

We had such a great time this year and what a way to wrap it up! The weather was perfect, the pre-game tailgate in the park was a blast, and although the Lugnuts did not prevail that night, the fireworks more than made up for it!

I hope you all enjoy the summer! Our next season is just around the corner, and it should be one of our best!

Final Awards & Lansing Lugnuts Family Outing

Tomorrow evening, well over 50 of us will head west to Lansing to watch the Lansing Lugnuts take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods. This has become an annual tradition for our ConQuest club and we are very excited to see so many family and friends joining us for the event this year!

The latest weather forecast hints at the possibility of a stray thunderstorm a few hours before gametime with temps in the low 70s. As of yesterday, the forecast was drier and warmer. We may still see further changes, so you may wish to plan for various possibilities!

The game starts at 7:05 PM at Cooley Law School Stadium, but we are planning to meet by 6:00 for a pre-game "tailgate" party and to hand out the final awards for the season. For this purpose, the Lugnuts organization recommended to us the Adado Riverfront Park, which is just a short walk from the stadium. Parking is available along North Grand Avenue and in the covered structure just to the south. There should be plenty of other options in the vicinity, as well.
We ask that each family brings a main dish of their own plus something to share (such as a dessert, drink, salad, or chips). Just to be safe, everybody should plan for their own utensils.

The final point tally and awards will be announced at about 6:30, and then we will walk over to the game. The Lugnuts have the best record in the entire Midwest League, and second-place Bowling Green is desperately trying to chip away at their lead. So the we should see some very exciting baseball! Afterward, there will be a fireworks display which I have heard is itself worth the trip out to the game!
Feel free to add your own comments or suggestions in the box below.

Fish On!

The boys and dads had a great time fishing last Friday evening at the pond. The weather was absolutely perfect and we had our biggest turnout yet. Not everybody caught a fish this time, but the guys did manage to reel in a few lunkers! The largest fish was perhaps a 17" largemouth bass. Everybody had fun...St. Peter would be proud!

Next Meeting This Friday (May 11th)

Hopefully the boys are rested up from last week, because this Friday evening (May 11th) we have our next meeting. This one will be at the barn at 7:00 PM.

Meeting This Friday!

We have our next meeting this Friday at 7:00 PM. The location for this meeting is at the Burke house.

Our activity this time will be a little different than usual. I guess you could say we will be having a marksmanship competition! The older boys will use their Airsoft (soft plastic BB) guns and the smaller guys will be sporting Nerf shooters! If you have some of your own shooting and safety equipment, please bring it with you. If you do not have any of your own, the others will gladly share.

It might be a little damp. But warm. I'm just sayin'...

Calendar Update: No Meeting This Weekend!

There was a meeting on our calendar for Saturday April 28th at 6:00 PM. But as a result of at least two conflicts, it is necessary to reschedule this meeting.

St. Mary School is having its 15th annual benefit auction the same evening beginning at 6:00 PM.

Also, our older boys will be competing against other ConQuest clubs throughout the weekend in the 2012 John Paul II Sports Tournament. This event will take place at Everest Academy in Clarkston. Please keep the boys in your prayers!

It's Been A While...Meeting This Saturday!

Our next meeting will take place this Saturday evening (April 21st) at 6:00 PM. We will be at the barn for this one.

It has been a couple of weeks since our last meeting. Hopefully, everybody is refreshed and eager to get back to business! We'll see you on Saturday...

Hurry: Make A Good Confession!

Here we are now in the midst of Holy Week! The Sacred Paschal Triduum is only days away! In these waning moments of Lent, it is important to perform a thorough examination of conscience to identify the ways in which we may have failed to live up to our obligations as fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, friends, and disciples. Do not delay to make a good and holy Confession to a priest. Your eternal soul depends on it!

Our ConQuest boys made this excellent short film last year to promote this marvelous Sacrament. Please take a few minutes to view it and share it with your family members. Then, let the boys know how much you appreciate their hard work!

*Disclaimer: The Confession shown in this video is simulated!

Please note: Most parishes have canceled any regularly-scheduled Confession times for this coming Saturday. There are a few special times set aside as late as Wednesday evening at some area parishes. Check local bulletins for details.

Next ConQuest Meeting - Friday March 16th

Please note the the LOCATION FOR THIS MEETING HAS BEEN CHANGED TO HOLY SPIRIT PARISH!

We will begin at 7:00 PM in the church nave to pray the Stations of the Cross. This is our last Friday meeting that is scheduled in Lent, so if you have not prayed the Stations yet, this will be the perfect opportunity!

Afterward, if the rain stays away, we hope to help Fr. John and his staff by clearing some of the winter debris from the parish grounds. Yes, it will be somewhat dark by then, so please try to send a flashlight with your boys for an interesting nighttime adventure! Work gloves and a rake would also be a good idea, if you have them. Using what we collect, we should even be able to have a decent bonfire! Temperatures are expected to be about 60 degrees on Friday evening.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Friday night at Holy Spirit!

This will be a "re-do" of our last scheduled meeting that was cancelled on account of snow. Therefore, we are hopeful that those of you who had offered to bring refreshments and awards items are still able to do so. If not, please let us know at conquestbrighton@gmail.com.

This Friday night, there is no snow in the forecast but a chance of rain!

Tonight's Meeting POSTPONED!

Due to the inclement weather, tonight's meeting has been POSTPONED. All of our local schools cancelled classes for the day, and it is our policy to follow their lead. God willing, the awards and Mass will be rescheduled for another day in the near future.

Many thanks to all of you who were planning to bring something, and to Fr. John, who surely would have invoked the intercession of Servant of God Frederic Baraga (aka the Snoeshoe Priest) to make it to the barn for Holy Mass!

Be safe if you venture out for Stations of the Cross or a local fish fry!

Rosary for the Bishop

In an earlier post we mentioned the need to follow our true shepherds in the Church. Of course, these are the Pope and the other Bishops in communion with him. In recent years here in Michigan, we have been blessed with some of the most extraordinary Bishops to be found anywhere! Heaven knows that our good Bishops are under fire for standing up for our Catholic Faith nowadays.

What can we do about it?
Support them with our prayers!

Rosary for the Bishop is a campaign that aims to support Catholic Bishops through prayer of the Rosary. Please take a few minutes to join in praying for your Bishop (and any others that you wish to include).

The website makes it so simple to find bishops, schedule your rosary, and set up automatic reminders! I have added this to the links section on the right-hand column of the blog.

2/10 Meeting Recap

Despite some treacherous weather conditions outside, we had a great meeting inside the barn this past Friday night! The boys had plenty of time for physical activities and also received some excellent catechesis from Br. Joshua Thompson LC and the dads.

Drawing inspiration from the life of St. Anthony of Padua, the younger boys prepared and performed their own creative skits on the virtue of hard work. Br. Joshua educated us all on the prophetic dreams of St. John Bosco. The older boys continued their study of the various enemies of the Church. This is a topic of immense importance, especially considering current events both in our country and worldwide. We must recognize who our true shepherds are and follow them. Not everybody who purports to speak with the Church's authority has the salvation of our souls as their ultimate goal!

Br. Joshua Thompson LC discusses St. John Bosco

There is NO MEETING this coming weekend. The next meeting will be on Friday February 24th at 7:00 PM.
